Dear Readers,
I know my blog has been lacking in content, especially compared to how strongly this year (2012) started off. Honestly, I've been feeling quite uninspired since arriving back home from my cruise.

I don't know why I think I was just anxious to start my new job, which I have! I'm ABSOLUTELY loving the company I'm fortunate enough to be working for, Avanade. (Whose policies and official or unofficial business will not be discussed here. Nor is any content on this site to be attributed to Avanade. The content of this blog is wholly my own.) Sorry for that, just making sure all my bases are covered! :) Anyway, I can't speak much to my role as I've just started and am still in the training process, but I love the company culture and the fact that I work for a company that is NOT hesitant to move forward with new technology and trusts its employees not to abuse the liberties afforded them! I'm in L-O-V-E!!!!!

In other news, I FINALLY purchased a new mattress. (This has been in the works for at least 2 months) I went with the iComfort Genius (the 2nd most firm option) and am sleeping on it for the first time tonight! Maybe I'll do a review!!!!!

That's all for now. Sorry if this post comes off as a piss poor attempt at British English, I've been reading Confessions of a Shopaholic on my Kindle (for the past 3 hours) and am about 80% of the way through and the story is FINALLY starting to amp up so I can't wait to finish it. (I just HAD to get this post published before midnight though, how committed am I?)

Friday Diary #6, Another Tech Recap

I decided to use this opportunity to post a couple of my favorite links. I chose more recent posts (I stared a few earlier in the week but since tech blogs move at the speed of light those are old news)

1. Arduino lamp
Same as last week, basically an eighth grader's science fair project, but its neat and I'm planning to build myself one. (I will definitely post the results)
2. Core i7 clocked at 5.6GHZ
What is there really to say about this? Its magical, I actually felt myself salivating as I read this article. A MUST READ!
3. CES 2012
I want to attend, seems like an IMATS for tech geeks. This is my first encounter with CES (I'm sure that's shameful) so I need to dig up more dirt but I'm excited to find out more.

In other news, I'm going to start studying for my MCITPE certification, a requirement for my new job, but I have very little to report as I've just started. Refer to Microsoft for more info.

Yay!!!! A shoe haul!

So, I thought I'd share with you some of my recent shoe purchases...then I saw how many there were and I was discouraged. But no matter, we press on!

Both of these are for work, since I will be going to Seattle in the middle of February, I need some warm yet comfortable yet well soled shoes to keep my toesies warm and my butt off the floor! ;)

These are my Shoemint purchase for December, I'm still making my mind up about Shoemint. I tried Jewelmint before it was all the craze and was very disappointed, so I'm hesitant about the 'mint' brands. I will do a full review once I have a couple more pairs and I make up my mind!

Still these are not bad and considering the heel they are surprisingly comfortable the platform is a solid 1.5" on a 5.5" heel, so you are getting the height without the pain!

As with all Shoemint purchases they were 79.99 a pair, but new customers get 20% off!

Last Friday Diary of 2011!

Dear Diary,
So its been 2 weeks since I graduated, and I've read 3 books thus far. I finished a whole book today (that's new for me)!

Not that any of the books I've read these past two weeks have much literary value, but they have helped me detox from the semester and prep for my annual tradition of one classic a year! (I have read one classic novel each summer for the past 4 summers, this time its Mary Shelley's Frankenstein, but more on that later)

Like I said, I've decided to read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein now. Thus far, I'm intrigued by the plot and am doing well glossing over the "Please forgive me, sire" tone of most classic novels by female authors. The "I'm a woman and therefore useless" attitude of those old times that men perpetrated and women bought into, has steered me away from female authors of the era. However, I figured I'd give it a go and see how I deal. I'm definitely thinking that I will try to find an online book club or forum to read the book along-side because you don't gain much insight into literature reading alone. I'll be sure to post information if and when I find a good one!

Alrighty, most of my recent posts have been beauty related so I wanted this Friday's Dear Diary to focus on tech. I've decided to link my favorite articles here and I'll include some that I was not impressed by, essentially this will be a post of prominent (to me) articles.

1. The Arduino Christmas Tree
This was just too ridiculous. I always find it silly when tech blogs discuss final project ideas. This is a barely passable Freshman final project idea, not noteworthy tech news.

2. Nook Tablet update closes sideloading loophole, lacks holiday spirit
I thought this was interesting as I've become increasingly more attached to my Nook since I've graduated. E-INK ALL THE WAY!!!!

And, just for good measure...an Engadget round-up!

If you haven't noticed I'm partial to Engadget. I like the witty and underhanded commentary their bloggers make and I appreciate their update frequency and article quality (generally).

I will definitely keep up with this trend for Dear Diary, maybe every other week?

Newspaper nails

So I've discovered a new blog!
The blog is called MissLadyFinger and I actually found it on the blog of another trend I caught wind of on a third blogger's Youtube account! So I'm ALL sorts of "new media"!

Alrighty, so I heard about this new nail trend called "Newspaper Nails" and it literally is taking newspaper and sticking it on your nails so that the letters come off on the nail.

Sound exciting? Well, here's the final look.

The supplies:

A small bowl

Rubbing Alcohol

Base Color

Top Coat

Small pieces of newspaper

Step ONE:

Apply base coat, I used OPI Jade is the New Black

I think this look works much better with a white base (or other light color) because the text is black and there wasn't enough contrast between the teal and black text :(

Step TWO:

Soak fingers in the rubbing alcohol

Step THREE:

Stick the small leaflets onto your nails and allow time to dry. Then SLOWLY peel the paper back.

Step FOUR:

Apply base coat.

and YOU'RE DONE!

My thoughts on this technique/trend:

Its important to use actual newspaper, I didn't and the text was too spaced out and the paper was too thick to absorb enough of the alcohol. Ultimately, the look suffered because I didn't prepare properly. :(
Pick a light base coat, again I didn't and the look is practically invisible

Overall, I like the concept and will try this again with the necessary modifications & proper tools! :)

Friday Diary is BACK!

I figure, If I come back, I better completely commit. That's why I've stayed true to my new updating schedule (which I think is easy to maintain, even when life gets hectic) and why I'm trying to balance the beauty-related posts and the tech posts. Along with my new found blog accountability, I've decided to continue the Friday Diary!!

So the biggest changes in my life:

I graduate today, December 16th!
I start my new job on the 23rd of January!

My sister is home for a month! (back from college)

I have alot to be grateful for and am very thankful to be this blessed! I haven't felt this good in a long time and I really want to chase this feeling. I know there will be hard times in the future but I want to become a more positive person and learn to focus on the good, rather than be dragged down by the bad!

WINTER nail Art

The beginning of winter means NAILS!

...At least for me, it does!

So this week I decided to try out the following:

TO RECREATE

Start by:
Gathering the supplies

First step:

Apply a brown base, I used OPI You Don't Know Jacques!

Second step:

Use a nail art polish OR brush to draw a design on one of your fingers.

I chose the ring finger:

Then:

Add a glittery top coat, I used Milani's Disco Nights, its a translucent glittery pink polish. Its more of a glitter-infused top coat than a polish, as it has a clear base.

Lastly:
Cover with a top coat.
I use the Revlon Liquid Quick Dry

Description

Write a Java console program that performs temperature scale conversions between Fahrenheit and Celsius.
When your program starts, it should print out a list of menu items.
After a menu item is chosen, the program should ask the user to input a number to convert. A result is printed on screen after the number is entered. The program then prints the menu again for user input.
If the user input chooses an invalid menu item, the program will print out “Invalid Selection” message. You can assume users will always enter valid temperature values.

Java Beans? No, Objects!

I've decided to post the homework assignments and my source code from ELET 4309 - Object Oriented Programming. The course was taught in Java, which I think is the most logical approach for learning OOP, as Java is an object-driven language rather than the process-driven C languages.

I figure, I learned alot from this course and would love to share that with anyone stopping by. You can view the class website, ELET 4309, to see all the assignments (and our grades ).

I will post an assignment each week and my answer the following week.
That way you will have enough time to try out the homework yourself and maybe even offer some alternatives to my methods!

So, sorry for posting this late but I've been SOOO busy this week. I had a test on Friday and spent the entire week studying for that, in painfully ugly outfits mind you.

Diary Entry:

So, I got a 100% on the general knowledge test I had to take for a job I applied for--FINGERS CROSSED!
I don't know what I got on my AutoCAD test yet, but hopefully I did well
Discovered a poet/scholar/thinker that I'm very interested in/ impressed by, Rumi

That's pretty much it. I will be getting my hair trimmed this week so look out for that post.

Product Rave: L'Oreal Extra Volume Collage mascara

So I stopped by CVS today to pick-up that Maybelline light blue nail polish Dulce Candy was talking about. I didn't find the polish, but I did get this L'Oreal Extra Volume Collage mascara FOR $5!

All L'oreal mascaras are on sale NOW so go pick a few up before they run out!

So pros & cons time!

Pros:

Dark
Lengthens (Not like Telescopic but decent)
Separates
Voluminous
True to promises: 12X impact & All day wear
Soft Lashes (VERY IMPRESSIVE for drugstore)
No Smearing!

Cons:

Clumps (looks like small crystals on some lashes, though not bad there is some clumping)
Flakes ( I haven't worn it for an extended period of time but I can tell it will)

All in all, I give this mascara a 4.5/5. It stays true to promises, wasn't horribly expensive (even at full price) and leaves lashes feeling soft and natural (thus comfortable for contact lens wearers)! I will have to experiment more to be able to say its a favorite but I'm loving it so far!

So, today I discovered that I LOVE the way bright pink lipstick looks on me! Its extremely flattering and that is surprising, considering I can't pull of red lips to save my life! I got these jeans a good month ago and they fit like a dream but, per usual, they are too long :( Generally, my mom promises to hem them and then keeps them for a month or so until I find them and start wearing the pants anyways...gotta keep the tradition alive, right? So I wore these today with the highest pair of wedges I own and it didn't look awful! I got this nail polish for free yesterday at ULTA and I'm loving it! It's an extremely flattering nude that doesn't wash out your hands and give you that 'nursing home manicure' look! (You know what I'm talking about, that horrid stained yellow color)

So, I've decided I'm going to do a diary entry on Fridays. Mainly, because there are lots of things that happen throughout the week that I want to blog about but they don't really mesh well with the OFOTD posts.

This Week

Positives:

Applied to a few different positions, noticed there are more jobs available (YAY!)
Started using my journal for 'ToDo Lists'
Devised a good technique for mapping out my calendar (w/ deadlines & due dates)

Negatives:

Not enough sleep (go to bed at 1-2am, wake up at 6-7 am)
Driving to school is getting old
Have continued putting on weight
Too much homework, not enough motivation

Well, my sister had a Spanish Honor Society induction last night,
and we got home pretty late, so I was up late doing homework. Blah! :( I'm too excited for her to be negative, though!

I haven't really decided how I'm going to format these posts, so forgive for me until I do. I hope this was enjoyable for some of you because I'm excited to do more!

Avon Blush in 'Antiqued Rose' & the Estee Lauder Blush brush. The really interesting thing about most of these products is that most of them are random buys and/or gifts. These two are no exception! The blush I bought b/c I used to love Avon and used almost ONLY Avon make-up. So, I a huge wave of nostalgia come over me when I walked passed the counter in the Mall! ;) The brush was actually a gift from my cousin, and I'm convinced it was TOTALLY accidental! (maybe I'm being crazy/cynical but she gave it to me in a makeup set that was NOT from Estee Lauder)Mark 'Hook up Lip gloss' in Tease. Same story as above, love AVON/MARK! The ULTA lip gloss in 'Baby'. This was a random buy, they were having a sale on all their make-up so I picked this up for $4! :))) Prestige Eyeliner Pencil in 'Powder'! The GREATEST eyeliner color ever manufactured! I love this color and I wear it with absolutely every look, and nearly everyday! Covergirl eyeshadow in 'Champagne'. I've been wearing this color since the 8th grade (a good 6 years ago) and though my general look has changed since then, this color is a consistent in my make-up routine. It is definitely the best color in the range (CG eye shadows) and quite possibly in general! (Yeah, its that great!) I LOVE THIS MASCARA! I wasn't impressed with it initially, b/c it required what i deem 'too much work', but the length it provides is enough to convince anyone to work with it a bit. Once you get used to applying it (almost like feathering your lashes black, as opposed to coating them) you will be astonished! Pretty self-explanatory. And all of this fits... ...in that BAG! DOUBLE YAY! :) I got the idea for this from Julie of Julieg713 on Youtube! I love her personality and videos, check her out if you haven't!

I've almost used an entire case of this cold cream and I can't say enough good things about it. Its not a fancy brand name and its not expensive but its great! You get a serious bang for you buck type of deal with this cream. I mean it just looks moisturizing, right?The cream is called "Soft" and honestly that is the perfect adjective to describe this cream. It truly feels soft on your skin. Its great for those windy days when you skin just feels tight. I use it after my cleanser at night b/c my skin is pretty delicate and most cleaners make it feel 'too clean', if that makes sense. Stats: light whipped consistency, gentle 'cold cream' scent (no disgusting cucumber), absorbed into skin in about 5 minutes, literally lasts all day! Anyways, its available at Target/ WalMart stores. And now, its available in a 2.6 ounce bottle. So, try the smaller size and get ready to be amazed by how soft, fresh and light it is!

I had to make -up today for my laziness yesterday. I had a test, so I wore a T-shirt, sweatshirt & track pants to school (HOTT!) This is one of my favorite outfits to wear. When in doubt, pair a tube-top w/ a SUPER COMFY, SOFT & JUST GENERALLY AMAZING cardigan from Express! I got this ring from Charlotte Russe in JAX, FL and I thought it was so unique I fell in love! I've never seen anything similar to it in Texas, sorry guys! :( You'll notice I absolutely ADORE these cardigans. I have at least 7 and they are well worth the money! They literally last a lifetime (the first one I bought is now 3 years old and in MINT condition) and they feel like nothing else. I swear those rabbit's foot key chains are rough compared to these babies! GET ONE, GET IT NOW!!!!!

So, more ruffles today! I wasn't kidding yesterday, hehe :) This is the world's best sweater! It's long in the back and slouch-y, so its versatile. It's surprisingly warm also! Like everything else in today's post, I got it at Express and they were having a sale on all sweaters so it was only $29.50!Just wanted to showcase how great these trousers are! They have the most unique color I've ever seen. They look pretty bland and 2-D in the photos but their actually much more interesting. Their charcoal with hints of white, gray and black. It's almost like they have the tiniest pinstripes on them!If your looking for a pair of classic black pumps, these are the way to go. Their from Nine West (on sale now for $19.99) have about a 3 1/2 inch heel and are SUPER comfortable. I used to live in these shoes when I was working last semester! I had to have a picture showcasing this watch. Its a staple in my wardrobe. I never wore watches before I found this puppy, because they looked so awkward on my arm (I have tiny wrists). It looks so real I've actually had people ask me what brand it is. Some even thought it was a ROLEX! I was like 'OMG! That's the greatest compliment I've ever gotten!' Funny thing about this outfit, I thought it was going to be so cute and borderline comfy but it ended up being a nightmare. I got a run in my stockings this morning, as the skirt is pretty short when you walk it rides up, so it would peek through...GROSS! These shoes are HORRIBLY uncomfortable, I thought I'd broken them in (I wore them around the house 4-5 times) but NOPE they don't budge!

All-in-all, today's outfit= A FAIL! :(

Microsoft Wireless Mouse 5000

No OFOTD posts lately. Sorry, its been cold and muggy and wet all week. Though, I do live in Texas so most people wouldn't bat an eyelash at 50 degrees! To compensate, I want to share a product rave! I absolutely LOVE this mouse:Before you can understand why I'm so excited about it you need some background information.

So I bought this mouse because I'm taking an AutoCAD class this semester and it is really hard on your fingers to use a laptop touchpad to draw.

For those who don't know what AutoCAD is: the CAD stands for Computer Aided Drafting. Its what civil, mechanical & electric engineers [yes, its generally used by engineers] use to develop plans & drawing of projects in their fields.

Well, as you can imagine trying to draw roof trusses and bridges can get pretty straining if your hand is always cramped and/or bent. So, I decided I need a mouse for my laptop. I didn't want a plain USB mouse b/c that would be horribly inconvenient w/ a mobile product, like a laptop. So I decided a wireless mouse was the way to go.

Following that revelation, I immediately got on Amazon.com (b/c its my favorite online store) and checked out their selection. I was a little hesitant to buy the 5000 from there b/c it had mixed reviews. Well, I wanted to dispute those bad reviews b/c this mouse is AMAZING! What I like about it:

Bluetrack technology*
Battery saving mode (turns off when transceiver is un-plugged & after 15 mins. non-use)
Full-size (not those tiny mice you generally see for laptops)
Programmable function buttons on sides
Pinwheel has regular range (doesn't jump too much/little on page)
Relatively far range

Only negatives, I've experienced:

The transceiver protrudes from port

Some people say that the mouse doesn't work well at larger distances but I haven't had that problem yet.

All-in-all I give this mouse a 5/5 rating!

* Bluetrack is the newest motion technology from Microsoft. It's a combination of laser and optical mice to allow use on all surfaces (carpet, marble, etc.)

Long overdue...Press-on Nails

So, I promised a review on Press on Nails about a month ago and I'm finally making good on my promise! :) I have used Broadway brand nails a total of 3 times, now. I was blown away by the realistic quality of them the first time I used them and so I kept coming back, but since that first use back in November 2006 I have been sorely disappointed.

Likes: two sets in each box inexpensive unique designs

Dislikes: pop off CONSTANTLY glue hardens under nails unprofessional look

All in all, these nails aren't worth the hassle! I thought maybe I was applying them incorrectly, because the first time I used them I was in awe! However, after 2 boxes and 4 applications, I'm NOT the problem. I can't decide if the nail quality has gone down or if I my expectatins were too high , but something about Broadway has dissapointed me! I'm planning on trying 'Kiss' brand press-ons because I've heard some decent reviews on them. I'll keep you posted! Go shopping at broadwaynails.com. I have used the: 'Charming' medium sized-modern square nails.
